The 8: The BMW M850i arrives spectacularly

Re-igniting the 8 Series of the glory years, BMW Malaysia yesterday presented The 8, the BMW M859i, for the domestic premium market in a spectacular setting, befitting an Icon. The New BMW M850i is developed on the race track, thus it has a mighty engine with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system and BMW Efficient Lightweight design. The 8 represents a new-generation of luxury Coupes.

Here’s a little recap on the first generaton 8 Series, which first came out in 1989. In the late 80s and early 90s, the 8 Series was a sports coupe that’s ahead of its time.  The car had several innovative features such as electronic drive-by-wire throttle, Dynamic Stability Control and Integral Active Steering with the use of multi-link rear axle technology. Fast forward to present time, exactly 3 decades later, the 8 Series is revolutionized into a luxury in line with modern times.

The BMW M850i: Beauty in the eyes of the beholder

The fascination oontinues with the 2nd-generation 8 featuring a low-slung design, an elongated silhouette with a slim window graphic and a roofline flowing to the rear. Coupe traits like  a distinctive ‘double-bubble’ contouring, long wheelbase and wide track give the 8 its masculine character. BMW recognizable key signatures are all present in the new 8 Series like the kidney grille, new Laserlight (slimmest to date by BMW), LED rear lights and twin exhaust tailpipes with a trapezoidal contour.

New for the 8 are an additional front spoiler, Air Breathers which better cooling, an exclusive Cerium Grey color, an M rear spoiler and illuminated door sills, to go with the  splendid doors. To top it off, Blue painted M callipers, 20” M light-alloy wheels in y-spoke style 728 M in Sunset Orange with mixed tyres. The wheels also come in optional Style 728 M in Jet Black.

Inside the new-generation 8, the cabin takes on a modern and minimalistic view. All control elements are neatly laid out, dashboard surface with high-quality materials and the trim finishers; all elements combine to make 8 truly special. For the first time, active seat ventilation is standard. The M Sport package either turns the interior into beast mode or offers versatility for daily commutes. Thanks to a boot capacity of 420-liters, the 8 provides adequate storage at the rear.

When it comes to the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, everything from connectivity to navigation are prevalent.  Some of the unique features are high-resolution instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of 12.3”, a 10.25” Control Display. Intelligent Personal Assistant with voice command and BMW Digital Key. Both the Personal Assistant and Digital Key are available for the first time.  

The 8’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo churns up an outout of 530hp (390kW), which is on tap between 5,500 – 6,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 750Nm is available over a wide rev range from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm for prolonged forward thrust. It can do the century sprint in merely 3.7 seconds and posts a fuel consumption of 10.4 liters per 100 kilometers.The V8 engine is paired with the latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sports Transmission.

BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system and Adaptive M Suspension

BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is more efficient in the 8, while promoting full variable distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels, The chassis is able to harness the dynamic potential of its powertrain and pump up performance. Other outstanding variables unique in the 8 are: optimized weight, a low center of gravity, well-balanced axle load distribution, ideal wheelbase length and a wide track, plus a rigid body structure, advanced suspension technology and favorable aerodynamic properties.

As advance as it gets, the 8’s driver assistance systems and safety features include active cruise control with Stop & Go Function, Driving Assistant Professional, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Pedestrian Collision Warning, Crossing Traffic Warning (front and rear), Emergency Stop Assistant, steering and lane control assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection and Evasion Aid.

The new BMW M850i is offered in these color hues:  Carbon Black metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, Sonic Speed Blue metallic, Barcelona Blue metallic, Sunset Orange metallic and Mineral White, matched with Black, Cognac or Ivory White BMW Individual Merino full leather trim sports seat.
