This year’s LA Auto show, we see plenty of new SUV being launch. From the affordable range all the way to the luxury range, we see SUV being launch at every segment. In the performance segment, we see Audi launch their 1st RS badge SUV, the Audi RS Q8 that will be available in the UK starting early next year.
Powering the new RS Q8 will be a 4.0L V8 TFSI engine that produces 600PS and 800Nm of torque between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm. This engine will bring the huge SUV from a standstill to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, and onwards to a electronically limited 155mph top speed. To further enhanced the exhaust note from the engine, the new RS Q8 will be fitted with the RS sport exhaust system with black tailpipe trims as standard in the Carbon Black and Vorsprung models.
To help improve the efficiency on this V8 engine, the biturbo V8 engine in the RS Q8 will be fitted with a mild-hybrid system (MHEV) that uses a 48-volt main electrical system. In addition, there is also the cylinder on demand (COD) efficiency module that deactivated cylinders 2,3,5, and 8 by cutting off the fuel injectors.
The power unit of the RS Q8 is mated to the Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via the standard 8 speed tiptronic transmission. The Quattro system typically distributes the drive power in a 40:60 ratio to the front and rear axles, and during slippery situation, up to 70 percent can be directed to the front wheels and up to 85 percent to the rear wheels.
The RS Q8 will be fitted with a standard RS-specific adaptive air suspension sport with controlled damping that helps the RS Q8 to feel at home on the racetrack or an offroad trail. The air suspension also allows the SUV to adjust the ride height up to 90mm.
In order to further minimise body roll during fast cornering, there is the optional electromechanical active roll stabilisation (EAWS). All-wheel steering also found its way into the new Audi RS Q8 to help improve the stability during high speed cornering and manoeuvrability at low speed.
For driver who wants to change the driving characteristic of the RS Q8, there is the Audi drive select dynamic handing system. The system allowed the driver to select 8 different driving profile to choose from: comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency, allroad, offroad, and the individually configurable RS-specific modes RS1 and RS2.
To complete the look, the RS Q8 comes with 22-inch aluminium wheels in a 10-spoke star design with 295/40-series tyres, and can be upgraded to an optional 23-inch rims. For carbon black version, you can get the 23-inch wheels in gloss black, while an anthracite black with diamond cut finish is fitted on the Vorsprung variant. Behind the large wheels, there are the internally vented composite discs (420mm) up front, 370mm at the rear.
For the exterior, the Audi RS Q8 gets a few changes to differentiate itself from the regular Q8. For a start, there is the RS-specific radiator grille in high gloss black. On top of the wheel arches of the RS Q8 comes with RS-specific trim strips in body colour to widen the body by 10 mm up front and 5mm at the rear. At the rear of the RS Q8, there is an RS roof edge spoiler to complete the look at the upper part of the car.
