At the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is bringing up its most premium flagship SUV, the Volkswagen Touareg R, for a world premiere.
The VW Touareg R, designed by the brand’s performance division, features a plug-in hybrid drive, for the first time in a high-powered VW SUV.
Styling the VW Touareg R
The Touareg R is based on the third generation Touareg launched in 2018. Fitting for a Performance model like the Touareg R, the SUV features the Black Style exterior package along with 20-inch alloy wheels (Braga), darkened rear lights, wheel housing extensions, trapezoidal design tailpipes and R-Line interior Vienna leather trim with crystal grey stitching. Reserved exclusively for the Touareg R are optional equipment like the 21-inch Suzuka wheels and 22-inch Estoril wheels, available for the first time.
Inside, the cabin is decked out in Silver Wave aluminium and high gloss black and silver look. Then there’s the Vienna leather seats with R logo in the head restraints, stainless steel load sill protection, new leather multifunction steering, illuminated stainless steel sill panel trim with R logo, brushed stainless steel pedals and white background lighting. The stitching on the leather seats is finished in Crystal Grey.
Main highlight of the Touareg R is the Innovision Cockpit, which consists of the digital instruments (Digital Cockpit, 12-inch screen) and the Infotainment system screen (Discover Pre-mium, 15-inch TFT touchscreen). Other VW Touareg R exclusives include Puglia leather package (Sepang Blue piping in the seat cushion bolsters) and piping with a thin blue decorative seam on the dash panel, as well as a 780-watt Dynaudio sound system and Night Vision thermal imaging camera.
The Touareg R has petrol, diesel and the plug-in engine choices. The petrol engine outputs 250 kW (340 PS), while the V6 TDIs go either 170 kW (231 PS) or 210 kW (286 PS). But the most powerful Touareg V8 TDI can do up to 310 kW (421 PS). Throw in a plug-in, the electric motor adds 100 kW/136 PS and when combined with the petrol engine, it gives the car a boost of up to 340 kW (462 PS). The maximum system torque for the Touareg R is 700 Nm.
An 8- speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box transmit power to the front and rear axles (4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive). There’s a center differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution. The Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically. A specific E-Mode offers all- electric driving and the Hybrid mode provides an optimized and automatic interaction between the electric motor and the V6 engine. Other drive modes include Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual profiles.
Other than existing safety and driver assist systems, the new Touareg R is the world’s only SUV plug-in hybrid model with optional Trailer Manoeuvring System, as well as the Travel Assist.
VW has scheduled the new Touareg R’s roll out in the second half of 2020.
