Volvo XC60 T5 Drive-E is introduced to appease domestic premium Crossover market

The Volvo XC60 T5 Drive-E Powertrain is the latest variant built according to the Swedish marque’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). In future Volvo cars, all variants will follow the SPA production protocol.

Since its inception in the domestic market in June 2009, the XC60 has been one of the preferred variant in Volvo Cars Malaysia’s line-up. The premium Crossover SUV tends to turn heads with its expressive and emotive motif. In a nutshell, the XC60 has a high ground clearance for that unmistakable and capable pumped-up look. The wheel arches blend effortlessly with the large wheels, while above the waistline, dashing lines trace the profile and sporty charisma.

At the front, the Volvo XC60 has the redesigned hood that offers a streamlined front-end and muscular embodiment. On the bumper, the well-positioned slanted DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) add a trendy look to the front end. A chrome bar grille is added to emphasize on the car’s width. The side is accentuated by the protruding shoulder line and deep-etched line at the bottom of the doors. From the rear, the exhausts are now integrated with the diffuser and act as a visual link.

2014 Volvo XC60 T5 interior refinements and more

The 2014 XC60 features a number of interior refinements which include new gearshift paddles, new seats, ambient lights and silk metal decor inlays. The gearshift paddles offer faster gear changes via the steering as well as allow the driver to be 100 percent in control. Volvo has always been known for its ergonomically designed seats as evident with the new seats in the XC60 T5.

The XC60 T5 is all about the Drive-E powerplant; a 4-cylinder engine that produces 245hp at 5,500rpm and 350Nm at 1,500-4,800rpm of torque. Compared to the previous XC60, the T5 version has a slightly lower horsepower, however it retains class-leading fuel efficient ratings. Additionally, the Crossover has a much improved CO2 emissions at a 157g/km.

Volvo cars are for life, and indeed safety aspects for their cars are considered most pertinent. The Swedish marque is constantly developing technologies and innovations that will make cars safer to drive. The XC60 T5 features enhanced versions of these technologies including City Safety, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Closing Vehicle Warning (CVW), Cross Traffic Alert and Whiplash Protection System.

In addition, the enhanced City Safety system now features active automatic brakes at speeds up to 50 km/h. Another important safety aspect is the BLIS (Blind-spot Indicator signal) which has been upgraded to a radar-based system. The BLIS is now able to monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 meters behind the car.

2014 Volvo XC T5 price and availability

Four colors are valid for the XC60 T5: Amber Black, Ice White, Electric Silver, Seashell metallic, and new for the XC60 is the Twilight Bronze; replacing the previous Terra Bronze. At RM288,888, the XC60 T5 is priced quite right for the domestic premium Crossover market. The Volvo XC60 T5 is now available for bookings at all authorized Volvo dealers, including Federal Auto Cars, Clear Marque and Angkatan Hebat.
